What is Mamey?
Mamey is a fruit that’s grown throughout Central America and the Caribbean. The fruit also known as Mamey Sapote was originated in Mexico. Over the years, the cultivating of mamey trees has expanded to south Florida. Mamey fruit is widely known in Latin American countries. Many Jamaicans has enjoyed it throughout the island for generations but in Jamaica, mamey sapote is simply known as mamey. So everyone should discover the mamey fruit and it’s secret.
The fruit is shaped like a mango and usually grows 5-10 inches in length. Because mamey is a solid fruit, it can weigh up to 5 pounds but generally less than 7 pounds. The tropical exotic fruit has a scruffy brown surface skin on the outside. The Mamey is ready to eat and fully ripe when you scratch the skin and the inside show a reddish kind of pinkish color. To eat the mamey, cut the fruit in half and remove the seed or seeds. The mamey can have from one seed to four seeds inside. Once it’s cut in half, the fruit has a sweet taste to go with a bright color. Some people compare the mamey taste to a mango or a cantaloupe but they all agree it has a unique taste.

Mamey Sapote tree is grown from a seed which is planted in the earth. The tree grows as tall as 60 feet with a wide trunk and large limbs. Some mamey trees are grafted. The grafted trees much time produce larger fruits than the normal or natural seeds. While most people eat the mamey fruit when they are ripe, others remove the seed and add to a blender or juicer and mix into a nice natural juice. The mamey can also be mixed with added spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla flavor and condense mike or skim milk. By adding all the spices with a cup of ice to the mamey and mix and blend together, you can enjoy your delicious refreshing mamey juice.
