Peanut punch is a very popular drink in Jamaica, Trinidad, Tobago, and other parts of the Caribbean. But this particular type of punch isn’t the oversweetened fruit-flavored beverage you might expect. It’s actually very nourishing for the body. The original peanut punch is usually a non-alcoholic energy drink very rich in high fat and protein.
Peanut punch has gathered lots of praise among Jamaican locals and tourists looking to have a taste of the local delicacies. It only takes a few minutes to make using a blender, and all needed ingredients are easy to find at your local grocery store. Given the increasing requests of how to make a pleasing and tasty peanut punch from home, I’m going to show you a fast and simple way to whip up a punch that both you and your friends and family can enjoy. But first, what makes this drink such a favorite?
What is Peanut Punch?
Peanut punch is a blended creamy energy drink that is rich in protein, antioxidants, and nutrients. Often consumed by athletes and bodybuilders due to the high protein contained, this drink has been passed down from one generation to the next and has over the years has developed several variations.
So feel free to get creative when you make peanut punch at home for your loved ones and infuse your own style and taste. Some people even include certain secret ingredients to make the drink all the more appealing. This is especially true for street vendors in Jamaica who are often trying to compete for a sale.
Although you’ll often find this drink sold on street sidewalks in Jamaica, the punch can also be purchased in supermarkets and grocery stores.
Jamaican Irish Moss
One such secret ingredient used to elevate the peanut punch is Jamaican Irish Moss. Jamaican Irish Moss is actually a seaweed that grows in Jamaica. Many people prize it for its supposed invigorating qualities. In addition to adding it, in powdered form, to peanut punch some people even use Jamaican Irish Moss to make a whole different beverage.
If you want to try Jamaican Irish Moss for yourself, in peanut punch or anything else, you can find it on Amazon, for between $5 and $10.
Origins of Peanut Punch
Peanut punch has its origins in Trinidad and Tobago. However, some people debate this. In fact, some people think that it really originated in Africa.
Health Benefits of Peanuts
Speaking of peanuts, did you know about their health benefits? They are not only delicious to eat but they also pack a real punch when eaten regularly. First, they’re a great source of antioxidants, as well as Vitamin B6 and Vitamin E. There’s also evidence that the antioxidants in peanuts may help to stave off cognitive decline. And they are also heart-healthy. Some also say that eating peanuts regularly can help with weight loss.
So, although the ingredients list in peanut punch will tell you that it’s a high-calorie drink, rest assured that it is also highly nutritious.
What Makes Peanut Punch Special?
While peanut punch is just as addictive and delicious as a milkshake or smoothie, there are certain things that set it apart from other energy drinks. For example, peanut punch combines ingredients which some people believe produces an aphrodisiac effect.
Many cultures around the world have “love foods” that they prize. In the Caribbean, peanut punch is one of them. Whether or not you believe in the theory, it’s worth giving it a try. After all, who doesn’t like indulging in a drink that offers circulatory, relaxant and muscle strengthening effects in a natural way while simultaneously arousing the psyche? It’s also high in protein.
Peanut Punch Recipe
We are sure you are dying to give this delicious drink a try so we included a recipe for you below.
Ingredients
The base ingredients are always the same. You can add roasted peanuts or peanut butter, milk, some spices, and sugar or honey. Because there are so many different variations on the drink, you’ll find every household adding on supplementary ingredients. My recipe is going to show you how to create the most popular variation of a peanut punch. Here’s what you will need.
- 2 cups of roasted and shelled peanuts or 1 cup of creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup of milk either normal or 1 can of condensed milk
- 1 cup coconut cream (optional)
- 3 cups of water
- 1 teaspoon of nutmeg or cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons of honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
First, pour the two cups of shelled peanuts or the peanut butter into a blender. Add half the water into the blender and start blending. Gradually pour the rest of the water while blending the peanuts at slow speed. Once you have blended it, turn the blender up and mix it a high speed until you’ve thoroughly mixed the ingredients.
Next, grab a strainer and slowly strain the mixture into a jar. Make sure you only get the liquid and none of the ground peanut bits as the texture won’t be as nice if you don’t strain it well. Then pour back into a clean blending jug. Add the milk or condensed milk, vanilla extract, nutmeg, honey and any other “secret ingredient” you desire. Beat it again until it’s frothy and then serve immediately or refrigerate it.
If you do choose to refrigerate it before serving, make sure you blend it again for a few seconds. You will want to serve the punch cold.
Bottoms Up
This particular recipe serves up to four people. As I mentioned before, there are many variations and additives that can go along with this drink. You can add Angostura bitters if you prefer that taste. Many Jamaicans also prefer to add some oats. Those who enjoy a little alcohol boost can also put half a cup of Guinness beer into the mix to make the drink more pleasurable.
Either way, you now have the recipe that’s easy to make and anyone at home can enjoy it with you both as an alcoholic and non-alcoholic punch. To make it creamier simply add the coconut cream. If you’re not a fan of too much cream then I recommend blending with normal milk.
Feel free to also add garnishes like chocolate once you’re ready to serve and by all means, enjoy this refreshing high-protein aphrodisiac. Feel free to share and pass on this Jamaican recipe if you liked it and let us know the interesting variations you added to your own creation.
