History of Doctors Cave Beach 

 

Doctors Cave Beach also called Doctor’s Cave Beach Club, Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club and Club Cave. Doctor’s Cave Beach is located in the heart of Montego Bay Jamaica and few minutes away from Montego Bay Sangster Airport. The Beach property was owned by Dr. Alexander James McCatty. During those times about 1906, the Dr. McCatty allowed many of his doctor friends to visit the beach. To get to the beach from the property, they had to walk through a cave and that’s how the name came about, Doctors Cave Beach.

 

Doctor’s Cave Beach was simply a great beach even then in the early 1920’s and something special happen. A famous British Osteopath named Sir Herbert Barker visited the beach, and then he returned to England and publishes an article describing his experience after bathing in the water. Sir Herbert Barker wrote that after bathing in the water, his good health was restored. He went on to write that the water had cured many of his health ailments. As a result, of those kind words from a well respected man, Doctors Cave Beach became famous immediately and tourist many of whom were rich and famous started to increase their visit to Jamaica. Shortly after, many hotels were built and Doctors Cave Beach became a famous place to visit in Jamaica.

However, during the hurricane of 1932 that hit Jamaica hard, the cave to the beach was destroyed but that did not stop tourist from visiting Doctors Cave Beach in Jamaica.
